Halloween Snacks

Thanks to those who helped provide the supplies for our Halloween snacks. We had a good time making them. I wish I had been able to take more pictures. I spent a great deal of time running back and forth to the microwave melting the orange candy coating for the pretzel jack-o-lanterns. Here is a picture of what we made.

Sam Houston Schoolhouse

Our trip to the Sam House Schoolhouse was great. We learned quite a bit about one of Tennessee's former governors. Did you know he was later a governor for Texas? We learned that he was the only person to be a governor for 2 different states.

We learned how yarn and thread were made. We were shown how to spin wool by hand and with a spinning wheel. Then we made a sheep with chenille stems and a bit of wool. Yep- that's what that was. It might not have made it home in the shape of a sheep.

We also learned how to grind corn to make cornmeal. We each had a chance to grind and sift the cornmeal. They worked hard.

Remember you can copy the photos you'd like from the ones posted here.

Lined up and ready to go.

Sitting in the schoolhouse

Yea! I remembered to take a group shot. Could I get any farther away?

Closer, but too much sun.

Look closely and you can see the sheep they made.

Many of them found this grate to be more exciting than watching the others grind corn. :)

This desk was made before 1776.

How many people can say they have touched something that is over 200 years old?

GREAT FIELD TRIP!

The Little Red Hen

After we read The Little Red Hen I put the kiddos in 3 groups to perform it with puppets. Here are the groups with their puppets. The ones with no puppet were narrators. I hope they told you about it.

Getting to Know Everyone!

During the the first few weeks we interviewed one student per day. Why? First, I wanted the kids to get to know each other since we had several new students. Second, I wanted them to have some experience with questions and statements. Third, I wanted to work on sentence formation, letter sounds, and syllables.

We started with "What is your favorite color?" Then I wrote the answers in the color. The students asked questions until the page was full of their responses. You can tell by most of the sentences what questions were asked. Occasionally, we would get something different, like "What is your favorite candy or fruit?", but usually the same few questions were asked.

I typed them up each day and sent them home. As I typed in the last one I decided to share them with the parents. I hope you enjoy them, as much as I did.
